RIM partners with Porsche in new BlackBerry design

(KEN MACHARIA) – In a one of a kind partnership, luxury car manufacturer has partnered with Research in Motion (RIM) to design the new elite Porsche Design P’9981 smart phone. The P’9981 phone naturally follows Porsche’s design superiority, with added emphasis on luxury and performance.

The exclusive material choices for this unique smart phone include a forged stainless steel frame, hand-wrapped leather back cover, sculpted QWERTY keyboard, and crystal clear touch display. This customized Porsche Design comes with and exclusive Porsche Design user interface. It also includes premium, exclusive PINs that help easily identify another P’9981 smart phone user.

It is not just all beauty without substance though. The smart phone is built on performance driven platform that features a 1.2GHz processor, HD video recording, 24-bit high resolution graphics, and advanced sensors enabling new augmented reality applications. It comes with 8GB of on-board memory, expandable up to 40GB with a micro SD card.

The Porsche Design P’9981 includes a next generation BlackBerry browser with a fast, fluid web browsing experience. It also features Liquid Graphics technology, which delivers a highly responsive touch experience with incredibly fast and smooth graphics. Throw in a built-in support for Near Field Communications and your BlackBerry for executives turns to a ‘sports phone’, without sacrificing the BlackBerry image.

Todd Wood, SVP for Industrial Design, RIM, sums up the collaboration. “It stems from the shared belief that form equals function,”

“The pure and distinctive design, coupled with authentic materials and an emphasis on the manufacturing process, perfectly match our philosophy and complement the Porsche Design product assortment,” adds Dr. Juergen Gessler, CEO Porsche Design Group, during the announcement.

The Smart Phone is due for retail before end of the year.
