Constipation has become an epidemic in our modern lifestyles. Why? Poor diets and lack of exercise.

What is constipation?

Constipation is defined as having bowel movements less than three times per week.  Other symptoms include difficulty when eliminating and the stools are usually hard, dry and small in size.

What is normal?

The common misconception is that if you don’t have bowel movements every day, you’re constipated.  Actually depending on the person, normal stool elimination could be three times a day or even three times a week.

The remedies

First thing that comes to mind is to take laxatives.  However, with prolonged use, dependency on synthetic laxatives may permanently destroy your body’s normal ability to eliminate stools naturally.  Most health professionals will warn you to use laxatives with great caution.

Keeping things natural is always a good way to go.

Increase your intake of fiber through eating more fruits, vegetables, nuts and whole grains.  For a natural trteatment of constipation, increase your fiber intake to 20-25g per day.
