Conje undergoing treatment in Mathare

January 21, 2011 – Former boxing sensation Conjestina Achieng is undergoing treatment at Mathari Mental Hospital.

Mathari Medical Superintendent Nelly Kitazi said that the middleweight is being well taken care of and should be discharged from hospital within two weeks.

“We admitted Conjestina last night (Wednesday). Currently she is very calm and undergoing psychiatric treatment,” said Kitazi.

Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Dr. Paul Otuoma who visited the pugilist on Thursday said that the government was committed in helping her with all the support that she needs to get better.

Reports in a section of the press stated that Achieng had become isolated from her family and destroyed most of her tools and trade and pulled her son out of school.

Family members had sought psychiatric help after noticing the change in her behaviour.

Achieng is credited with breathing life into Kenyan women’s boxing as well as drawing new fans to the sport.

In her prime, Achieng had several title bouts against local and international boxers.
