July 2, 2010 – Facebook users are gaga over Lady Gaga and the pop star has surged past US President Barack Obama in the race to become the first person with 10 million fans on the social network.

The first living person, that is. A Michael Jackson remembrance page has attracted more than 14 million fans.

Lady Gaga, who is as well-known for her bizarre outfits as her chart-topping music, had 9.76 million Facebook fans on Thursday.

Obama had 9.41 million.

The US president had more Facebook fans than Lady Gaga last week but she has pulled ahead in recent days.

Lady Gaga’s Twitter account, @ladygaga, has also attracted more followers than Obama’s @barackobama account, which, like his Facebook page, is managed by his political arm Organizing for America.

The @ladygaga account has 4.72 million followers while @barackobama has 4.42 million. The official White House account, @whitehouse, has a mere 1.77 million followers.

Lady Gaga may have topped Obama on Facebook and Twitter but another pop star holds the title for largest number of followers on the micro-blogging service — Britney Spears, who has 5.24 million followers for @britneyspears.
