June 28, 2010 – Over the past few days, we’ve heard quite a bit about Rape-aXe, the condom with ‘teeth’.

I absolutely hate rapists and personally think the only punishment for them is castration. With the entrance of Rape-aXe into the market, I wonder just how much it will do to deter rapists.

Dr. Sonnet Ehlers invented the Rape aXe ‘condom with teeth’ 40 years after treating a rape victim who told her, “If only I had teeth down there.”

She says she consulted with “engineers, gynaecologists and psychologists” to help make sure the design was safe and would not subject victims to HIV or other STDs.

Dr. Ehlers is distributing the female condoms in the various South African cities where the World Cup soccer games are taking place.

The woman inserts the latex condom like a tampon. Jagged rows of teeth-like hooks line its inside and attach on a man’s penis during penetration, Ehlers said.

Once it lodges, only a doctor can remove it — a procedure Ehlers hopes will be done with authorities on standby to make an arrest.

“It hurts, he cannot pee and walk when it’s on,” she said. “If he tries to remove it, it will clasp even tighter… however, it doesn’t break the skin, and there’s no danger of fluid exposure.” Source.

Just wow. I can’t even imagine the pain the would-be rapist would go through. My only concern, however, is how the rapist will react to that pain. All human beings have inbuilt self-preservation mechanisms.

When I’m in pain, my first instinct is to lash out at whatever is causing the pain. In this instance, the pain would be coming from the woman’s vagina. I’m scared the rapists will be forced to lash out at the vagina, using whatever means necessary to stop the pain.

And what happens if his instinct is to kill me? You can’t expect the rapist to sit still on top of a woman just waiting for the cops to catch him. I think someone needs to demonstrate how this will work. I’m curious… What do you think?
