Wyclef; the energy god arrives in Kenya

WYCLEF_ARRIVAL_015_957311306.jpgNAIROBI, Kenya, Oct 8 – Clad in a yellow track suit, the confident Wyclef Jean stood at the JKIA on Wednesday night and told journalists that he had just had some really nice peanuts.

And as he ate them he told us he was the ‘Energy god’ and that’s what he was going to bring to the stage as the Host of the MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMA), which goes down at the Kasarani Sports Centre on Saturday night.

“We are here for the MAMAs. The MTV Awards, it’s gonna be great. Akon is coming through. It took me 16 hours to get here… we’re gonna have a lot of fun, you dig?” said the laid back funny guy.

He refused to say however whether he would also perform at the Awards ceremony, which will be action packed between 7pm and 9pm.

“I was excited to come here because I have never been to Kenya… I wanted to go to the Safari but they told me it would take two days… so I will come back over and over again.”

Wyclef continued speaking to us even after he finished the peanuts.

“I’m originally from Haiti. I don’t just say Africa when I come to Africa, I live Africa in America too, which is the most important thing, you dig?”WYCLEF_ARRIVAL_010_383206582.jpg

He told us he likes Obama, and that he went back to school after The Fugees split up because he wanted to explore his music; do music for films and send out strong messages to the young people.

“I did some stuff for Hotel Rwanda, but I just felt that the signal that I want to send out to the kids… this is another side of a rapper… You can still go to school and stay fly.”

While saying that his visit to Uganda was on fire, Wyclef said he wanted to come back to Kenya with MTV and do a proper tour of the region with special focus on the youth.

Among the artist line-up is D’Banj from Nigeria, STL, Lira – who arrives on Friday and Akon among others. Akon, are you coming?
