The Green Generation Campaign is an initiative by 98.4 Capital FM in partnership with The Green Belt Movement and the European Union.

The Capital Team invites you to join us as we restore forest areas across Kenya, thus contributing towards the conservation of the environment.

The Campaign’s First Phase

On Saturday, the 5th of September 2009, the Capital Team will lead interested listeners, schools, celebrities and clients in a tree planting exercise at Karura forest. We would also like to encourage students, teachers and parents to help recycle old newspapers by collecting as many as possible, for resale to dealers and paper companies. Recycling reduces the felling of forest trees.

Capital FM’s Presenters will be running an On Air campaign, informing the public of the actual environmental situation in Kenya, what needs to be done to conserve the environment and how every single person can make a difference.

Capital FM is also supporting two events linked to the Green Generation Campaign:

  1. The Mavuno Eco Festival will take place on Saturday 22nd August at the Mavuno Dome at the Belle VueMuthoni Ndonga Cinema. Expected talents are renowned artists Eric Wainaina, Aaron Rimbui, Kanjii Mbugwa, Neema, and Muthoni of “Blankets and Wine” fame. Additionally, the Afrizo band will make an appearance, at what will be their first local performance in years. For the youth, there will also be live performances from Juliani, M.O.G and Chit Chat.
  2. The Enough is Enough concert will take place on Sunday 23rd August at Thika Stadium, featuring artists STL, Mr Lenny, KNel, Capital Mix master Dl Joe, and a host of others. All proceeds will go towards tree planting efforts in grabbed public lands, forests, wetlands and near rivers.

Capital’s Programmes Controller, Seanice Kacungira, will be present to give a brief talk-up on the Green Generation Campaign.

New Developments
To keep you in the loop here’s a summary of what we intend to do for this campaign as a station and your participation is valued:

  • Tree planting at Karura Forest on the 5th of September. We’re helping restore a plot of land that was damaged by fire at Karura.
  • Climbing Mt Longonot on the 12th of September [hopefully with some of our listeners] in an effort to clean up the mountainside.
  • Working with Ocean Conservancy to clean up the beaches along the coastline starting September.
  • Working with North Eastern Going Green to build the first manmade lake in Garissa as well as plant crops in the area.
  • Partnering with the Ministry of Environment to clean up Nairobi River very soon.
  • Working with the Ministry of Environment on the tree planting project which targets 35,000 schools countrywide, starting off with their pilot project targeting 4200 schools.
  • With the help of NCBDA we will also volunteer our time to plant flowers and trees in the CBD area soon.
  • Working with the British High Commission to fence off and protect a large section of Karura Forest.
  • Tree planting with AEISEC Daystar in October.
  • Working with and supporting ‘Wheels of Africa’ a group of professional cyclists who have initiated their own environment conservation activities.

Other news
In partnership with Twende Magazine, between the 11th and 13th of September 2009, the Capital Team, interested listeners, students and teachers will participate in a mountain climbing exercise, in a pledge to clean up Mt Longonot.

We will continue to update you on the activities of this important Green Generation environmental campaign, in pursuit of the goal of planting 10 million trees by 2010.

Do come and support us.
