MTV Africa Music Awards announce nominations for October telecast

The second annual MTV Africa Music Awards (MAMAs) revealed nominations for its October 10 ceremony in Nairobi, Kenya, via announcement.

Artists of both Nigerian and South African descent received a total of 15 nominations, with Nigerian hip-hop singer 2face Idibia scoring four (best male, artist of the year, best video and best R&B). The afrobeat-influenced Nigerian singer D’Banj, the leading winner at the 2008 MAMAs, racked up three nominations this year: best male, best performer and artist of the year.

Other African countries making their mark this year included Uganda, Tanzania, Ghana, Namibia and Mozambique. American artists represented in the international category include rappers Jay-Z and Kanye West, plus R&B singers Beyoncé and Akon.

Winners will be chosen by public voting, via website and cellphone. Haitian-American hip-hop singer Wyclef Jean will host the second annual MAMAs at the Indoor Arena, Moi International Sports Complex.
