Can the real Kalonzo please stand up

May. 6 | With regard to the just unveiled proposed Constitution, it would be a gross understatement to note that Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka is a man torn between personal ambition and public duty.   Just hours ago, the man from Tseikuru shared the high table with other dignitaries at the KICC to receive the first copies of the proposed law. Certainly, the public saw him not prevaricate when he said Yes at the unveiling of the proposed Constitution but I lost focus when he went ahead to poke holes on the “five percent fault “on the envisaged law. I believe this is one man who is still frightened to be clear on his beliefs despite the obvious battle between the crown and the cross on matters Constitution. Kalonzo has always touted himself as a "Born Again Christian" so no one should be surprised at his lily-livered retreat...

Cry my beloved country over spilt milk

Feb. 4 | Kenya is a country of irony; milk farmers are an unhappy lot this week while consumers are the most blissful. Reason? Local milk factories have decided to turn away farmers in their droves because of a glut while consumer prices have been slashed by over eight shillings. Hundreds of litres of milk are now going to waste due to limited capacity at most of the collection points scattered across the country. For the lucky whose milk is collected, the price has sunk by Sh8 per litre. Creameries including the government run KCC simply cannot  cope with the increased milk production that has come with the rainy season. The main milk companies have been in the business for years and with a little market intelligence they should have prepared for the superfluity. It is common knowledge that milk production goes up during and immediately after...

Reactionary government at its best

Jan. 21 | It is a shame that of late the Government has appeared to react to issues bedevilling this great nation when the horse has already bolted. It will be an understatement therefore to say that tea-party reactionaries are on the increase in government. The ideas of this class can only be considered as backward, outdated and opposing to progress. I don’t want to join those who lampoon the grand coalition for no reason, but here is my case. Do we have to wait until a terror group infiltrates a ‘peaceful’ demonstration before the man in charge of national security wakes up from his slumber? Is the minister in office to contribute to what is already in the public domain? What efforts did he put in place to forestall the deadly protests? What is truly shameful about this is that the minister then orders a nationwide crackdown that...

Kenyans want to know their numbers

Jan. 7 | Kenyans stayed indoors on August 24 last year to participate in the National Population and Housing Census knowing that the exercise was critical to the development of this nation. The Sh8 billion exercise was dogged by controversy right from the beginning over the “tribe” question with some saying the question was insensitive, coming 18 months after more than 1,500 people were killed in ethnic violence after the 2007 general election. Pundits now say this same question is the one that is holding the release of the provisional census results that was scheduled for December 31. Another date of January 7 was missed as the government decided to do away with provisional results, and instead complete a comprehensive tally. Planning Minister Wycliffe Oparanya on Wednesday announced that they would not be releasing the results after...

You have 27 days to read the draft

Nov. 19 | Have you read the harmonised draft constitution that was unveiled on Tuesday?   If your answer is in the affirmative, then give yourself a pat on the back. Before you were done did you noticed any clauses in the draft that you detest? If so, have you forwarded your submissions to the Committee of Experts? If you fall in the two categories (the have read/not read), you have 27 days if your submissions are to be considered before the launch of the final draft. And if you are waiting for your ‘political thinker’ to read the draft and interpret it for you, then you better start queuing outside their offices because 27 days are not eternal. But then, why should you let anyone interpret the draft on your behalf while the current Constitution and the draft say it’s your responsibility as a citizen to acquire basic understanding...

This sleazy grandiose debate must end!

Oct. 29 | A debate on what is largely a case of self interest and unnecessary political grandstanding is once again looming large and if not nipped in the bud is likely to derail the quest for a new Constitution The row that involves the criteria of redrawing constituency boundaries has split our honourable Members of Parliament down the middle. The debate pits those agitating for the democratic principal of one-man-one-vote against those demanding one-kilometre-one vote, with both camps threatening to shoot down the new Constitution if their opinion don’t take the day. MPs for one-man-one-vote principle, mainly from the populous Mount Kenya region are pushing the principle in expectation that their areas will be split and probably reduce pressure from their political rivals. More constituencies will also translate into more MPs and an upper...

Kofi Annan is a good man!

Oct. 9 | Kenyans, it has been said before have a very short memory span. Psychologists will tell you that this is a trait associated with a very emotional society. Kofi Annan came to Kenya early last year when the country was on fire under the aegis of the Panel of Eminent African personalities. He did not disappoint as he brokered a power sharing arrangement heralding the Grand Coalition Government. This coalition was established to undertake a programme of fundamental reform to deliver sustainable peace, stability and justice through rule of law and respect for human rights.  Then the drama began. Nearly two years after this no mean achievement, Kenyans have started questioning his moral authority to pile pressure on the government to deliver reforms agreed prior to the national accord. A section of politicians have been opposed to Dr Annans...

Is Ranneberger vomiting on our shoes?

Sep. 24 | The US ambassador has done it once again! In his usual mien, Mr Michael Ranneberger invited journalists on Thursday to his Muthaiga residence to yet again issue threats to Kenyans.  I hold no brief for people who have made a career frustrating reforms in Kenya and those who are always caught with their hands in the cookie jar but pause for a minute and ask what it matters to Washington. Even though I am not competent to interpret laws, as I’m sure Kiraitu Murungi will remind me, Kenya is a sovereign State and any other laws apart from international decrees cannot be dictated upon Kenyans by any other foreign nation. One wonders what right the good old Ranneberger has to warn Kenya all the time on the reforms agenda. To belittle Kenyans with travel ban threats as if Washington is the ultimate destination is also missing the point....
