UoN extends lead as KU beats Strath in global Uni ranking

Strathmore University has slipped to third position, losing out to Kenyatta University in the global Universities ranking as University of Nairobi maintained its leading position as the best University in Kenya.

According to the latest study by Webometrics, UoN extended its lead in Africa moving up from position 17 in January to 14 in July. KU jumped 15 places to rank at position 30 while Strath came in at number 37 in the continent.

The ranking is based on research output of faculty, online presence, adoption of modern teaching and academic publishing. This ranking system measures how strongly a university is present in the web by its own web domain and pages

Moi University came fourth; Egerton and JKUAT followed closely at position 62 and 65 in Africa.

Kenyan Universities trail other universities, with UON ranked at 2,455 globally. American and European universities dominated the top 20 list . South African universities – University of Cape Town, Stellenbosch and University of Pretoria – continue their dominance as the best academic institutions in Africa.

However, Webometrics own website seems to be down at the moment. Last years list saw US universities take top 15 positions. MIT, Harvard, Stanford, Cornell and University of California, Berkeley scooped the top 5 positions in 2011.
