BAT aims to scoop the Energy Management Award for the second time

NAIROBI, Kenya, Mar 25 – When British American Tobacco Kenya was announced as the overall winner of the 2016 Energy Management Award, it was a culmination of years of hard work, self-assessments, tests and a few missteps.

BAT beat 72 other companies to clinch the overall award recognizing companies with outstanding performance in energy management.

The award, which is run by the Kenya Association of Manufacturers’ Global Environment Facility and the Government, includes a rigorous process of an in-depth audit of energy systems.

KAM holds the Energy Management Awards during the Kenya Sustainable Energy Day which is set aside to celebrate the great milestones that Kenya has taken to develop Clean Sustainable Energy.

A team within BAT takes the lead of aligning Kenya’s operations with the group’s sustainable growth agenda pegged on the Global Reporting Initiative G4 indicators.

The Group Operations Director Alan Davy said that the company will focus on transport & warehouse energy efficiency projects moving forward, “driving innovation with our strategic logistics partners.”

This is part of a bigger ambitious goal of reducing energy use by 25 percent by 2025 while increasing the use of renewable energy by the same margin in eight years.

“We also continue to work towards our long-term target to cut carbon dioxide equivalent emissions by 80 percent by 2050 and have so far achieved a 47% reduction from our 2000 baseline,” states the BAT sustainability report.

The group has invested in energy-efficient technologies, switching to less carbon-intensive fuels and renewable energy sourcing.

KAM Chief Executive Phyllis Wakiaga said Sh12 billion has been saved in the last 10 years with more expected to be saved in the coming years with the country embracing and developing Clean Sustainable Energy.

“KAM recognizes our government for showing great leadership in spearheading the medium-term development of 5,000MW of new Installed Power Capacity. Most of this installed capacity will comprise of renewable energy to provide the base-load power,” said Wakiaga.
