NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 3 – Airbnb has revealed that there are over 4,500 rooms listed in the online platform marketplace for home stays in Kenya.

Speaking to Capital Business, Nicola D’Elia, the Middle East and Africa regional General Manager for Airbnb said the number has been doubling every year with 50 percent of the listings in Nairobi.

Nairobi was one of the 12 cities globally that Airbnb launched Trips – a new product that allows visitors to experience trips by being immersed in the host communities.

“Trips was launched late last year and we got over 25 experiences that range from running with an ex-professional runner in Iten or spending time with a local designer in Nairobi,” said D’Elia.

Domestic travellers using the platform also doubled in 2016 as more property owners opened their homes to guests.

D’Elia says the coast region has experienced a resurgence with a spike in bookings in places like Malindi and Lamu.

Globally, Airbnb had about 2.3 million listings on its home-sharing platform with estimates from analysts showing the platform closed the year with revenues of $1.7 billion.
