NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 10 – As you whisper ‘I love you’ to your sweetheart on Valentine’s Day, hotels will be waiting for the cash to roll in.

Already hotels especially those out of town are fully booked with only two days to the weekend.

Serena Hotels Group Corporate Sales Manager Joyce Wangui says their lodges in Naivasha and the Maasai Mara are fully booked for the weekend with city hotels at 50 percent bookings.

Wangui says most of the bookings are from locals who have chosen to be out of town for the weekend.

“We are still getting more bookings considering that Kenyans are a last minute lot, the bookings this year are way better than last year,” Wangui told Capital FM Business.

The same case is being experienced in Mombasa according to Kenya Coast Tourism Association Chairman Mohamed Hersi who says the bookings indicate Valentine’s Day will good for business.

“We are getting a lot of couples who are booking for the weekend, now that the Valentine’s Day falls on a Sunday and now that air travel has become affordable,” he explained.

And just like last year, luxury Valentine’s Day packages are in the offing with Villa Rosa Villa Rosa Kempinski doing it again offering a Sh5.4 million Valentine’s Day Package whose aim is to take the couple through a 50 hour intimate and romantic journey built around an ultimate luxury experience.

The sister Hotel in Kisumu, Acacia Premier Hotel is also offering a presidential suite on Valentine’s Day at a cost of Sh500,000.

Hotels are not the only ones milking the day, shopping malls in the city centre that include Westgate Mall, Taj Mall and Garden City Mall have been preparing themselves and are already running campaigns urging lovers to throng their malls.

Kenya Flower Council CEO Jane Ngige says there is likely to be increase in volumes compared to last year.

“We are likely to have more vendors this year especially in Nairobi as The Nairobi County Government has allowed more vendors to put up in the city centre.
