Speaking during the launch, Vivo Energy Managing Director Polycarp Igathe said the product will be in two categories including Shell Advance AX3 and Shell Advance AX5.
Shell Advance AX3 is designed for motorbikes with small, hot running and hardworking engines while Shell Advance AX5 is a premium multi-grade lubricant designed for motorbikes with mid-sided engines.
“We are the first company to dedicate a special lubricant for motorbikes. We identified this as a growing area especially boda bodas and we felt the need to innovate a product that fits them,” Igathe said.
According to the Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), the motorcycle industry has experienced a 500percent growth in the last three years with over 700,000 motorbikes in the country at the moment.
“The motorbikes are used for commercial activities, passengers and goods transportation. Boda bodas constitutes 80 percent of the motorbikes,” Igathe noted.
He said the company has already distributed the product in all of its 120 retail stations, with a plan to also get more retail distributors apart from the stations.
“It will take a minimum three weeks to change the oil compared to two weeks at the moment and the price is targeted very well.”
