Michael Macharia, Kanini Mutooni and Sara Menker are among 19 personalities from Africa admitted to the exclusive community.
The 2014 class of Young Global Leaders (YGL) is drawn from 66 countries.
Macharia is the Founder and Chief Executive of Seven Seas Technologies Group a leading provider Information technology and business solutions in Africa while Mutooni is the Founder and Chief Executive of MyAzimia Limited, a company that provides a white label technology solution for businesses in the lending sector.
Menker on the other hand is the Founder and Chief Executive of Gro Ventures, a data-driven advisory that is creating a network of farmers to report farming data, allowing banks to lend with less risk.
The 2014 class includes 49 individuals from East Asia, 46 from Europe, 16 from Latin America and the Caribbean, 18 from the Middle East and North Africa, 49 from North America, 17 from South Asia and 19 from sub-Saharan Africa.
Africa is well represented in the 2014 class, with a total of 19 members where nine are drawn from South Africa, three members Kenya and two from Tanzania. Ghana, Nigeria, Uganda and South Sudan have one member each.
Other Kenyans who have previously been admitted to the World Economic Forum – Young Global Leaders include TV Journalist Julie Gichuru, InMobi Africa former Vice President and Managing Director, Isis Nyong’o and former Vision 2030 Director General Mugo Kibati.
The YGL Class of 2014 was drawn from a pool of over 2,000 candidates who were evaluated by Heidrick & Struggles and screened by a selection committee chaired by Queen Rania Al Abdullah of the Hashemite Kingdom of Jordan. Candidates were evaluated according to specific criteria including their proven track record and commitment to society.
