LAIKIPIA, Kenya, Nov 26 – Rumuruti-based Ngare Narok Meat Industries Limited is set to embark on an ambitious Sh200 million expansion project that will also see the creation of more job opportunities to the communities around Rumuruti division.

The company is in the business of slaughtering livestock and making various meat products like sausage and canned meat.

The expansion will exploit the by-products of the abattoir operations among them hides and skins, prime beef, organic compound fertilizer and leather products.

The company chairman Ndiritu Muriithi said they had recently partnered with The Kenya Climate Innovation Centre (CIC) to assist Ngare Narok in developing the leather value chain through the use of local herbs for leather tanning, manufacture of leather products and capacity building of the leather value chain actors in aspects of quality enhancement.

Ngare Narok stimulates the weekly trade in livestock market at Rumuruti town where an average of 500 cattle and 1,200 sheep and goats are sold at the auction every Thursday. This trade has an estimated value of Sh30 million.

Muriithi said that the County government of Laikipia collects Sh162,000 per auction day in cess, and Sh10,000 in slaughter fees.

The expansion of the project will result in a 30 percent increase in this economic activity, creating 76 jobs directly at Ngare Narok, and another 250 indirectly in the value chain. The company has been in operation since the year 2007.
