The International Data Corporation (IDC) has released its research showing an increase in demand for tablets for quarter 3 compared to the last quarter. Q3 2013 saw 47.6 million units shipped worldwide, up from 34.8 million same quarter last year.

Apple continued its lead market share with 29.6 percent, though Samsung is catching up with 20.4 percent. Apple’s market share was eaten up by Samsung growth with Asus grew from 4.5 percent in the second quarter to 7.4 percent to maintain its third position.

The survey, based on tablet shipment, attests to Android being a favored operating system among various consumers with 47 million units shipped. The growing appetite for tablets has also been a factor with the increasing 36.7 percent year over year in the last three months.

In a statement in regards to the IDC results, Mr. Chris Wen, the product manager for Asus Kenya said the present success for Asus in the tablet market share is partly as a result of the growing popularity of tablets in emerging markets like Kenya.

“This ranking is not just important to the company but to gadget users as well since they will be keen to lay their hands on other Asus products which are better performing and pocket friendly,” said Mr. Wen.
