NAIROBI, Kenya, Jun 27- Ben Chumo has been appointed the acting Managing Director of electricity distribution firm Kenya Power.

Chumo, who is currently the Human Resources and Administration Chief Manager, takes over from Joseph Njoroge who has been appointed the Energy and Petroleum Ministry Principal Secretary.

The new MD was appointed by the company’s board and takes over the new position with effect from July 1, 2013.

Chumo joined the company in 1986 as a Human Resources Officer, and rose through the ranks to become the Chief Manager responsible for human resources and administration in 2003.

The board members say they believe Chumo will be up to task for the time being due to his wide knowledge of operations of the organisation having previously been deployed in all regions of the company.

At his level, he has been involved in various corporate restructuring programmes, and part of the team that embedded a performance management system in the company in 2004.

He was also seconded by the company to Manitoba Hydro International of Canada in 2010/11 fiscal year under a memorandum of understanding, to undertake a capacity building programme for the Afghanistan electricity sub sector in Kabul.

Njoroge was sworn into office on Thursday at a ceremony witnessed by President Uhuru Kenyatta at State House, Nairobi.
