ARUSHA, Nov 29 – East African heads of state will vote at a summit on Wednesday whether to confirm or reject the application of Sudan to join the five member bloc, officials said Monday.

The East African Community (EAC), which groups Tanzania with Burundi, Rwanda, Uganda and Kenya, has been asked by Sudan to join the group, following South Sudan’s independence from the north in July.

“This issue is also on the agenda,” said Richard Othieno Owor, an EAC Secretariat spokesman, who added that an application by South Sudan would not be considered at the meeting, in the Burundian capital Bujumbura.

“The secretariat has just received it (the application), maybe it will be considered at another summit, not this one,” he said.

Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir, wanted by an international court for genocide, is not expected to attend the meeting.
