Nissan to build new Qashqai model in Britain

LONDON, June 8 – Japanese auto giant Nissan said Wednesday it will build the next Qashqai model in Britain, safeguarding thousands of jobs at its key European plant and across supply chains.

Nissan, partner of France\’s Renault, will invest £192 million (215 million euros, $314 million) as part of the project, Nissan boss Carlos Ghosn said after meeting British Prime Minister David Cameron.

"The UK has been a cornerstone of Nissan manufacturing since 1986, with the Sunderland plant (in northeast England) setting important benchmarks for quality and efficiency in Europe and around the world," Ghosn said.

"It\’s the home of the Qashqai, one of Nissan\’s biggest product successes, and, as Nissan\’s leadership in sustainable transportation grows, the plant will become one of the pillars of our zero-emission manufacturing."

Cameron described the investment as "fantastic news and a great demonstration of the strength and vitality of the UK car industry."
