Uchumi takes up yuCash

NAIROBI, Kenya, Feb 3 – Mobile operator Yu has partnered with Uchumi Supermarkets to provide a service which allows customers of the retail chain to pay for goods at the till through yuCash.

Speaking at the launch, Uchumi’s Managing Director Jonathan Ciano said this will bring the retail outlet closer to their customer which is in line with its long term business plan.

“We are not in the business of selling anything. We are in the business of providing customer service. With Yu joining us we have our customers and we have agreed to facilitate what you would call a clean customer service in terms of buying. This is an opportunity that has a commercial value for both organisations,” Ciano said

Yu’s Country Manager Atul Chaturvedi said the provider is happy to be partnering with the chain as this is its first such partnering and will look to broaden it wings to other retail chains.

“All Uchumi supermarkets will be linked with the Yu ‘buy goods’ module so that all Yu customers need not carry cash in the pocket  and whatever goods they buy from Uchumi they can actually pay through the yuCash facility itself,” he explained.

The partnership allows Uchumi Supermarkets to carry out YuCash registrations and cash-in-cash-out transactions in all their outlets.

Yu said it is in the process of upgrading its money transfer service as it sought to expand its services countrywide.

Mr Chaturvedi said the operator is looking at improving its service delivery mechanism to grow its market share in the country.

Yu is the mobile phone brand of Essar Telecom Kenya Limited.
