Nakumatt enters Uganda

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 27 – Nakumatt Holdings has formally set up shop in Kampala with the opening of a Ksh237 million hypermarket.

The store is anticipated to create job opportunities for more than 200 Ugandans.

Speaking at the opening of the new outlet, Nakumatt Holdings Operations Director Thiagarajan Ramamurthy said the venture is inline with the firm’s regional expansion plans.

“Plans to extend Nakumatt’s regional foothold are still on course with plans for similar openings in Tanzania now underway,” Mr Ramamurthy said.

The opening of the store which is also the ninth round the clock outlet within the Nakumatt Chain and the first in Uganda comes on the heels of the Nakumatt City Centre opening in Kigali, Rwanda last August.

Nakumatt holdings intends  to invest at least Sh1.58 billion in the East Africa expansion plan which will see it open three branches in Uganda, two in Rwanda, four in Tanzania while raising its Kenyan network to 30 in the next two years.

“The Ugandan government and investment authorities have been extremely supportive in this venture and we are extending our commitment to maintain world-class retail standards,” Mr Ramamurthy said.

Covering a shopping floor space of more than 75,000square feet, the new Nakumatt Oasis Hyper will stock more than 50,000 products.
