Kenyans to pay electricity by sms

NAIROBI, Kenya, Apr 15 – Kenyans can now pay their electricity bills using the Zain mobile commerce platform Zap.

Kenya Power and Lighting Company (KPLC) and Zain Kenya   entered into an agreement that will see its customers pay their monthly electricity bills at no extra cost.

“Under the deal customers will also be able to inquire their outstanding electricity bills by sending sms with their account details to 5551,” a statement from Zain Kenya indicated.

Speaking during the launch on Wednesday, Zain Kenya Managing Director Rene Meza said the company had started rolling out the value added services on the Zap platform following the successful launch of the money transfer service over the last two months.

“Through Zap we would like to make sure that customers enjoy the benefit of convenience while undertaking commercial transactions,” said Mr Meza.

Mr Meza noted that the agreement will also help KPLC in cutting down the company’s transaction costs.

KPLC customers using Zap will be required to pay their bills at least 24 hours before the due date.

He said the commercial service has 200,000 customers already.
