Les Baillie to retire from Safaricom

NAIROBI, July 1 – Mobile operator Safaricom has announced the retirement of its Chief Financial Officer Les Baillie.

A statement from the company indicates that Baillie\’s position would be filled by Chris Tiffin with effect from August 25th, 2008.

Baillie will however remain with the Company until his retirement in 2009 as Chief Investor Relations Officer reporting to the Chief Executive Michael Joseph.

He will also continue to serve in his capacity as Chairman of the Safaricom Foundation.
 
Baillie has been Safaricom since 2000 and has led it through three financing exercises including the recent highly successful initial public offer (IPO). His move to the Investor Relations docket is expected to ensure continuity of service to the investor and financial community.
 
According to the statement the early appointment of Tiffin will create sufficient time for a successful handover that will ensure there is no detrimental effect on the Company or its shareholders.
 
Tiffin joins Safaricom from Celtel Nigeria where he has served as Chief Financial Officer since 2004.
 
Prior to taking up his current position he was the Financial Analyst and Financial Manager with Tracker Network (PTY) Ltd South Africa and prior to that held various financial positions with Vodacom (PTY) Ltd in South Africa.
 
Tiffin is a Chartered Accountant and married with two chilren.
